Russia Protests Lithuania’s Plan to Remove Soviet Military Burial Site
The Russian Foreign Ministry stated that the diplomat was issued a strong protest over what it described as an ongoing campaign targeting Soviet-era military graves in Lithuania.
Officials said the latest dispute follows a previous protest on April 30, when Russia raised objections over plans related to another Soviet memorial site in the city of Siauliai.
Moscow warned that any destruction, damage, or desecration of military burial sites constitutes a criminal offense under Russian law, adding that those allegedly responsible are known to Russian authorities.
The ministry stated: "The Lithuanian representative was once again reminded that the destruction, damage or desecration of military graves, including those located abroad, is a criminal offense in the Russian Federation. All individuals personally responsible for this are well known in Moscow."
The issue reflects continuing diplomatic tensions between Russia and Lithuania over historical memory and the handling of Soviet-era memorial sites in the region.
